13. Do you insulate coops? Back
to Top
- No, we don't. But, you really don't need to. Chickens, like most
other birds, are built to withstand cold temperatures. They will huddle
together to keep warm when necessary. If you’re still concerned,
here are a few ideas… First, you can spread additional straw inside
the coop to create more of a natural insulate. The area beneath your
coop is a great place to store some straw or even autumn leaves. Recycle
this environmentally friendly insulate to the garden once spring arrives.
If you think you need more insulation, consider adding electricity to
install a heat lamp inside the coop.
14. When should I move my chicks outside to their coops?
- You should typically wait until your chicks are fully feathered, which
may take four to eight weeks. However, it also depends on your specific
climate. If you're living in South Carolina and it's April, your chicks
could stand going out before they're fully feathered. But if it's early
March and you live in New York, you might want to wait a bit longer.
In addition, your chicks should be totally off the heat lamp for a few
days before you let them outside. This way they will be more accustomed
to the lack of a consistent heat source. And use your common sense...
Pay attention to your chicks after you let them outside. If they seem
agitated and are cheeping loudly, consider bringing them back inside.
15. How many eggs will I get?
- The number of eggs you’ll get varies depending on the breed
of chicken. However, you can generally expect one egg per day per hen.
16. What should I expect from the delivery of the coop?
- Be prepared for your coop to arrive via a large tractor trailer truck.
Curb side delivery is included in your coop package. Curb side delivery
means that your coop will be brought onto your property and unloaded
in your driveway or yard (adjacent to your driveway). Be aware that
you will need a way to relocate the coop to the area that you want it.
Depending on which coop you order, it could weight anywhere from 80
to 900 pounds. Extra charges may apply if you'd like the driver to place
your coop in a specific location. If the driver determines that he is
unable to place the coop where requested, the extra charge will be refunded.
If you feel unsure, send us pictures of your desired coop location ahead
of time and we'll let you know what we can do.
